Orris Root (Iris x germanica)

Orris Root is used medicinally for oral and dental health, bronchitis, diarrhea, liver congestion and dropsy. Has been commonly used for perfumes, potpourris and sachets because of its unique violet-like fragrance. This natural herb is also thought to have valuable diuretic, emetic and cathartic properties.
Dried Orris Root is a staple of potpourri mixes due to its color and violet scent. The rhizomes of the Orris Root are harvested in late August and freed of the rootlets and brown outer bark. After that, the herbs are then dried and packed in casks for sale.
Orris Root herbs are often used as flavoring in candies or as a base for certain items like toothpastes and perfume. Tea made from Orris Root is sometimes used in cases of bronchitis, colds, coughs, diarrhea and dropsy. Used as medicinal herbs, they are thought to strengthen gums and freshen breath while also possibly having diuretic, emetic and cathartic benefits.
Because of the Orris Root has a scent similar to violets, these dried herbs were very popular during the 19th and 20 century. Orris Root cut and sifted is now commonly used to scent and preserve in pomander balls, spice wreaths, or sachets.
Root powder is used in perfumary, potpourris and sachets, and for scenting and flavoring. Its scent is similar to violet. It is included in a variety of cosmetic formulas. The volatile otto of orris is a favorite scent fixative. The fresh root juice has been used to remove skin discolorations and freckles. The root yields a black dye. The flower yields a blue dye. The seeds are used as beads.
This flowering plant grows to 3 feet tall, with bluish-green, narrow, flat, sword shaped leaves - the largest of all the species. Large, deep blue, or purplish-blue flowers bloom in spring, show three bending petals of faint purple, inclining to blue. Purple veins run lengthwise; the beard is yellow, three erect petals are bright blue, with faint purple lines. Flowers have an agreeable scent. The brownish creeping rootstock is thick, fleshy, spreading over the surface of the ground.
